Independently for longer, meaning with as little (professional) help as possible and with choice and control over the decisions, equipment and assistance.
We believe that by providing a complete user-centric home system, with easy to use interfaces, the elderly will be given the means to stay in control of their lives. We believe that modern times offers a large number of affordable technologies that can help anyone to improve her/his life and by making these technologies accessible to the older users, we aim to give them the same opportunities. System services will be offered to control automated processes and enhance their home experience (e.g. domotica control). In addition it focuses on their health and well-being and thereby will allow the development of new strategies to improve self-management. These services are linked and presented through a uniform interface, which can proactively take part in the life of the elderly by being presented as a social companion.
The home system will be designed in a modular fashion, allowing elderly users to select only those services and technologies, which particularly appeal to him/her. Furthermore, enhanced customization within services, will not only provide a personal touch, but also empower the coping styles of elderly instead of forcing them to change their ways.
Furthermore, although the prototype evaluation phase may involve some professional caregivers to help evaluate the prototype, the project aims to develop a final solution that will not require any efforts from the caregivers, except in emergency situations.
Actively in the sense of staying in charge of their own lives and participate in society the way they want.
The main part the system and its services will be focused on the integration of popular existing communication possibilities (such as Facebook). Unique interfaces, designed in a co-create process with the elderly, will overcome the difficulty barrier that exists for most of these communications methods.
The essence here is to make it as easy as possible. We will achieve this through the home system and its social companion, by touch-, gesture- and voice-control and devices that will lend themselves perfectly for the designed interfaces (e.g. touchscreens, tablets, smart-phones). A certain set of hardware will be required to enable this so the focus will be on ubiquity in order not to disturb the elderly home environment unnecessarily.
Integrate existing technologies or develop technologies and infrastructures into easy to use, affordable and sustainable solutions that address a range of needs
The home system will be composed of a main (home) server, sensor and monitoring devices and a range of peripheral devices. Most of the required hardware is already widely available and mass produced (therefore relatively low-cost). A major task will be to identify compatible state of the art hardware and integrate it with the software services. The main server and the sensor/monitoring devices are a fundamental part of the whole setup and will be offered as part of the overall product. The peripheral devices however, for example smart-phones, tablets or a home-computer with a touchscreen, may be owned already by the elderly user. In that case the (client) software component of the system can be offered to be installed on their personal devices.
Have a high potential to be commercialised and scalable.
We are certain that commercialisation of this project is highly feasible, especially since we do not build everything from scratch but actually look closely at what is available at the market right now and in the near future. However, collaboration, investigation and research with the early participation of the elderly and other possible end-users during the whole project will be required. Another highly important project outcome will be the architecture that offers the needed scalability and flexibility for deployment. During the project’s life-time, success indicators and exploitation deliverables will ensure the highest possible potential in commercialization (and dissemination).
Living independently for longer at home with an active life-style
We consider three different end-user groups, namely elderly users, family and friends, that will be affected by the usage of the Vizier product. For the elderly it will mean to be able to stay more self-sufficient for a longer period of time. Their close relatives will have the benefit of using their already favourite ways of communication (e.g. Facebook) and secondly staying closely involved in their lives while being far away.
Promotion of AAL services and product for the elderly
The open nature of the Vizier project, where security and privacy are addressed from its core, will facilitate the adoption of the novel elderly home solutions by other commercial entities. The SMEs directly involved in the project will adapt it into their core business, which will lead to European-wide new business relations in the elderly care system.<
The visibility starts directly from within the project through its extensive pilot trials, which take place in two European countries. Furthermore, the exhaustive dissemination of the project will ensure a wide spread of its accumulated knowledge and inventions.
